Born and raised in New York City, Merrill’s photographs show his affinity for the geometry and poignance of the city street. In his introduction to Merrill’s book of this body of work, Pedestrian Photographs, writer Wendell Berry wrote:

My interest in this set of photographs begins with the realization that, in making them, Larry deliberately violated the rule of inattention. He has presumed to make himself exceptional by looking at these people, most of whom are not looking back, at him or at anybody.
